Project Won’t Load or Shows an Error
A project that hangs on a spinner, renders a blank screen, or throws “Something went wrong” is different from general slowness — it usually means the app hit an error while fetching or rendering that specific project’s data. (For app-wide lag, see Performance and Loading Issues.) These steps go from quickest fix to deepest, so work top to bottom.
Quick Resets First
- Hard-refresh the page:
Ctrl+Shift+R(Windows/Linux) orCmd+Shift+R(Mac). This bypasses cached scripts, which fixes most blank screens after a Loomstack update ships - Check status.loomstack.app — if there’s an active incident, no local fix will help; wait for the all-clear
- Try opening the same project in an incognito window. If it loads there, the problem is local state: log out, clear site data for
app.loomstack.app, and log back in
One Project Fails While Others Load
When the rest of the app works but a single project won’t open:
- Open the project from a direct task link (from an email notification or Slack message) instead of the sidebar — if tasks open individually, the board view itself is choking
- Switch views: append
?view=listto the project URL. Very large boards (10,000+ tasks with many custom fields) can exceed what the Kanban renderer handles smoothly; List view loads data in pages - Reduce what the view loads at once:
- Collapse done columns (three dots on the column > Collapse)
- Add a date filter such as “updated in the last 90 days”
- Archive completed tasks in bulk via three dots > Archive completed tasks
- If a specific automation or custom field was added right before the failures began, ask an admin to disable it temporarily and reload
”You Don’t Have Access to This Project”
- Confirm you’re logged into the right workspace (avatar > Switch workspace) — the same project URL will show an access error from the wrong workspace
- Ask a project admin to check Project settings > Members. Private projects don’t inherit workspace membership; you must be added explicitly
- If access was granted through a group, check whether you were recently removed from that group
Project Missing from the Sidebar Entirely
- Click Projects > View all — the sidebar only pins favorites and recent projects, so an unpinned project isn’t gone, just unlisted
- Check Projects > Archived. Archived projects are read-only but fully restorable: open one and click Restore project
- Search the project name in global search (
Ctrl/Cmd+K); if it appears for a teammate but not you, it’s a permissions issue (see previous section) - Deleted projects can be restored by a workspace owner within 30 days under Settings > Workspace > Trash
Capture Details Before Contacting Support
If none of the above resolves it:
- Open your browser’s developer console (
F12> Console tab) and screenshot any red errors that appear when the project fails - Note the project URL, the time it failed, and whether teammates can open the same project
- Send these to support — a console screenshot typically cuts diagnosis time from days to hours
Summary
Hard-refresh and check the status page first; use incognito to separate local state from server problems. When one oversized board won’t render, load it as a filtered List view and archive completed tasks. Access errors are resolved in project membership settings, and “missing” projects are almost always unpinned, archived, or in the workspace trash rather than gone.
